From the Factory to your Feet

Shoes are a consumable aesthetic representation of culture, and its value as being a medium for communication transcends the leather, mesh, and rubber of which they are comprised. To many, footwear is purely of practical value, to others, the shoes we lace up display narratives of our past and present, it tells a story. But before the story lands on your feet…it begins in the mind of it’s maker…the creative designer. Let’s follow the Journey of a Lugz shoe as it goes from the factory to your feet.

The first stage of building a Lugz shoe is building a sample. This is where the designer takes his or her ideas…puts them on paper(literally) and then create a 3d rendering of it in a computer animated drawing(CAD) complete with specs. After sourcing out and selecting the materials of the shoe …the CAD is then sent out to be hand made. The sample is now born!

Now that the sample is created..it can now roll through two to six weeks of fit testing. At each stage we make adjustments based on the feedback and based on what we see in the shoes. After tackling any design issues…a “Confirmation Sample” is now ready to go.

At this sample stage we are done. We know the material, the color, the fit and the feel we will use to create the product. Typically this gets us to six months from production and delivery to retail. The only reason for this is to get the shoes right based on the testing.

From confirmation we go to one of the hardest parts of the shoe making process: commercialization. (creating additional molds to be graded to at least 11 sizes and many times a great deal more). So the idea is that the size 13 fits and feels as good on a size 13 foot as a sample size 9 does on a size 9 foot. Once that process is completed we can then get the ball rolling on creating the final product.

Believe it or not this is where the expertise lies…in the Factory. Sure, factories come a dime a dozen but finding one that has the expertise to replicate shoes over and over and over again with consistent quality is what counts. After all, you, the end consumer, expect that the size 10 you are trying on is exactly like the size 10 you’ve been wearing for the past three months. Every single one of your shoes is touched by as many as 40 people on a production line and the entire process is not done in one day. So the fact that from a confirmation sample the factory gets your size   10s right is downright amazing and that  is why selecting the right factory is important.

Finally at the end of the 18 month cycle the shoes land at retail and on your feet….where we hand the baton off for you to make memories in them. We literally celebrate when the product finally gets in your hands. Most of all we are hopeful that you can instantly give us some feedback — feedback that we can use to create the next version of that shoe which in turn is probably less than 18 months away from hitting retail shelves.

BEHIND THE BRAND – PART 5

Who remembers the animated series that Lugz was a part of – way back in 2000?

FORTY AND SHORTY! If this hasn’t jogged your memory…let’s re-introduce them:

Forty and Shorty were two 13-year old misfit friends, one black and one white, who lived across the street from each other. One in the ghetto and the other in a trailer park. Week to week on this animated webisode, you witnessed their adventures and were introduced to “unique” family members.

This was a great project to be a part of. We got to work with the amazing actor/producer Claude Brooks, who Co-Created and Executive Produced the web series as well as being the voice of Forty!

WATCH IT HERE!

Yes, Forty is rocking his Lugz!

BEHIND THE BRAND – PART 4

As we reminisce about the last 20 years of the brand – one of the things that we think about, and are proud to share with you, is the amount of films that Lugz has been involved in.  We have had some great friendships and working relationships with some of the best Directors, Producers, Actors and of course, the Wardrobe Stylists.  So many films we have been invited to; our list still impresses us!

I’ve selected a few of my favorite to share with you –

HE GOT GAMEA Spike Lee Film – Who wasn’t rooting for Jesus Shuttleworth?  A son of a convicted fellon, with so much talent on the court.  The problem is that his father had one thing on his mind – get Jesus to sign with a big state college and receive a reduced sentence.  Check out Ray Allen sporting his Lugz Shirt!

THE CORNER – 6 part HBO MINI-SERIES - A year in the life of an inner city neighborhood – a true story showing a family living in poverity amid open-air drug markets in West Baltimore.  This was difficult watching their struggles with little light at the end of the tunnel.  Charles Dutton did an amazing job capturing every gritty detail – and we thank him for allowing us to be a part of this film.

ME MYSELF AND IRENE – On a much lighter note – how funny is Jim Carrey?! Playing a Rhode Island State Trooper with multi-personalities – who just loves his boys!  Check out our friend Anthony Anderson wearing his blue zip up Lugz Shirt.

THE NEPHEW -  A young bi-racial American travels to Ireland following the death of his mother, to meet her family.  The young star – is Hill Harper.  You can see him sporting several Lugz Apparel pieces.

NOTORIOUS – The story of the late, great Christopher Wallace – aka Notorious B.I.G.  We were very fortunate that we had the opportunity to work with Biggie – and were honored to be included in the film.

BEHIND THE BRAND – PART 3

WE LOVE OUR ENDORSERS – BUT OUR FIRST ONE IS ALWAYS THE SPECIAL ONE!

In our 20th year celebrating Lugz, we have to look back to the great endorsers we have had over the years, an unbelievable list of great artists. Lugz actually was one of the first brands that promoted Hip Hop Artists. For those of you who have followed Lugz – you know this great list kicked off with the Green Eyed Bandit himself – Erick Sermon…the “E” in EPMD.

(Trivia Question – how many of you followed EPMD to remember what that stands for?)

We started working with Erick the same way we have worked with all of our Hip Hop Endorsers – they wore Lugz, they liked Lugz – so they endorsed Lugz.  Erick would come up to our offices, with a few of his Def Squad boys – yes, this included Redman and Keith Murray who later on joined the list of Lugz Endorsers.  He’d sit and pick out what he liked – and of course he’d want to “re-design” and change what he didn’t.

The day of the shoot, he put on his Lugz Boots, his Lugz Apparel and we headed out to Brooklyn.  8 hours later, several changes, we came out with some dope print ads.   Everyone was listening to radio back then – so Erick also did some cool radio spots for Lugz. We did most of our photo shoots on the streets – we were Built for the Streets back in 1993 and we are still Built for the Streets 20 years later in 2013.

By the way – the trivia answer is “Erick and Parrish Making Dollars”.

TECH REDEMPTION: Blackberry 10

The new BlackBerry 10, which debuts on Jan. 30, 2013 is RIM’s  last attempt at remaining relevant in a smartphone market dominated by Android and iPhone. The company, who once dominated the market with its email and messaging platform looks to establish itself now as a secondary, viable alternative to iPhone and Android devices.

A prototype of the touch screen version of the BlackBerry 10 was demonstrated late Wednesday at the USA TODAY bureau and resembled the iPhone in shape although the aesthetics of the final version is yet to be confirmed. It will come in two versions: a hard keyboard and a touch screen with a 4.2 inch display that boasts a 12-24 hour battery life.

There are some cool new features to look forward to, such as a more intuitive auto correct, an 8 megapixel that reports comparable images in poor lighting conditions much like Iphone 5 or Nokia Lumia 920s, a brand new voice control application – RIM’s answer to Siri and basically a host of virtual tools that strike a “balance” between your work and personal stuff.

Keep in mind that anyone who’s been able to get their hands on one of these can only comment on the demo version which is likely to be missing the full spectrum of the final product, something that RIM would most likely want to keep under wraps until the launch date. Shares seem to be in agreement that RIM may have a legitimate winner on their hands with stocks now trading at around $12 which is up nearly 80% since late September. Looks like the embattled RIM still has some life left in it…however if it fails to sell as expected… it could be R.I.P for RIM.

When we really knew

So we know how the name Lugz came about – and what the first print ad looked like (Peep How it All Started); but do you know when we really knew we had a great product?

We had a couple of styles of great boots – a pair of jeans, a flannel shirt, a vest and a few hats.  Before beginning our relationship with our amazing list of endorsers, as we went to press with our first print ad, we were ready to get the product out to the movers and shakers.  We always loved music – but everyone loved a good tv show too.   Remember it was 1993 – so think back to what was happening on tv: The Arsenio Hall Show, Fresh Prince of Belair, Martin Show, and who could forget In Living Color.

So the product was sent out – and within days, Arsenio Hall was doing his “Woof” pumps wearing a fresh pair of Lugz, Lugz Jeans and Lugz Flannel Shirt.  Speaking of Fresh – not too long after that, the Prince himself was wearing it in Bel Aire.  Followed by Martin and In Living Color.  The Wayan Brothers began supporting us – continued to their own show a few years later – as well as into their movie projects.  Jamie Foxx also followed suit.  This was only the beginning! Much more to come……

REAL HUSBANDS OF HOLLYWOOD

Based on the segments at the 2011 BET Awards that generated enough acclaim to warrant its own series, comedian Kevin Hart stars in what’s said to be BET’s first original comedy with the potential of being a breakout success.

In a November 2012 interview, the stand-up comedian and actor declared to BET.com: “I can honestly go on record saying this show will be what Chappelle’s Show was for Comedy Central”. Only time will tell if this semi-scripted satirical look at the popular reality TV franchise on Bravo along with its counterparts on VH1, TLC and elsewhere…will be the “Fakest reality show ever”. It will focus on these husbands played by Kevin Hart, Robin Thicke, J.B. Smoove, Boris Kodjoe, Duane Martin and Nick Cannon and their interactions with not only each other but their famous wives. The supporting cast performs its duties well, with Nick Cannon and Robin Thicke being the surprise funnymen of the crew, but this is ultimately Kevin Hart’s show. Will you sacrifice midweek sleep to catch the premier? Sound off!

Show premieres tonight Jan 15th, 2013 on B.E.T(check your local cable listings for time)
